Net Neutrality: The Real Story

Net neutrality has been an issue in the news over the past 6 months but yet many people still have no Idea what it is. One person I was speaking to had no idea of what it was or how it could effect them. Personally I have became involved in this and filed a comment to http://www.fcc.gov for the simple fact that the head of the FCC was the largest lobbyist for cable providers and was somehow given this job over the FTC by Barrack Obama. Now, the glaring issue is how was this man placed in power to begin with? How is it the President of the United States has to ask him to treat this like a utility. Never the less the man is not following the Presidents requests and is still considering putting in a new net neutrality law. Net neutrality is a wonderful thing if you are a cable provider. It allows them to provide two speeds and make a profit. The only problem with that is that once this takes effect, Many new start up companies will not be able to pay for this premium service. You too can take action against these people as I have been outspoken on this issues.

Obama tells wheeler he is to treat this as a utility under title two which probably won’t work for various reasons. The President put him in power and the man has been working for his companies that have campaigned for him. Comcast and many cable groups, however Netflix, Google and many other large companies have sided against net neutrality and have campaigned against it. There is a change coming is if for the better of for the worse we have yet to see. The Government is always scamming us.

Here is what you can do!

Photo Manipulation Can be a good thing or can it?

Photo manipulation has been around since the invention of the camera, whether it was superimposed or altered many people have done this for years. Some political figures have used it to change their image, or remove people who have fallen out of favor of the person. Others have used it to make them seem more powerful. Recently, Victoria Secret fell out of favor with their latest ad campaign “A Perfect Body” it angered so many that they had to change their advertising slogan. With Photoshop things have changed you can see your favorite movie star naked, or can you? Playboy for years have “airbrushed” their centerfolds but why? Do you really want to see that pimple? But whether or not you like it some have used Photoshop for a more artistic experience.  But why would people do this?

Everyone knows this picture on the left but who is that on the right? John Calhoun.
Everyone knows this picture on the left but who is that on the right?
John Calhoun.

This is an early example of a famous picture that was altered but why? That’s not even a picture of Lincoln it painted. Interesting.

Can you see a change?
Can you see a change?

Most of you wouldn’t know this old photo had been doctored at all but the war commissioner who fell out of favor with Stalin was removed from the photo for political reasons.

The before photo with the war commissioner! Wow what a change.
The before photo with the war commissioner! Wow what a change.

So as you can see people can disapear completly from history based on these photographs. Is it right that history is changed because someone in charge didn’t want to be associated with any more. Well that is in fact changing history and I don’t really believe that is the best thing for the world to know. As a historian I find it troubling some of the photos I found that I had believed to be real, only to find out that they were in fact frauds.

But on a lighter note. Let’s look at what’s really going on today. We know that Victoria Secret Photoshopped and that is fine. Here is a picture everyone should know and tell me real?

Julia Roberts used a body double in several scenes in the movie to give her more curves and only her face is real in this Movie Poster!

Now they did this to give it a sexier appeal and we all know sex sells, but when you think you just saw a famous person naked in a movie you might be surprised to know that actually it’s another body. Flash Dance the movie that was made famous for an outrageous dance scene with a women going bonkers before judges, well I hope you got a good look at those leotards. Some of the scenes were actually a male doing some of the more difficult dance moves. Just goes to show that some editing and a little time people can make you see anything they want you to see.

Yep all Photoshopped including some ab definition. So be careful what you look for in the age of CGI you have to ask yourself is this real or imaginary?

Dickerson Zoo

Dearest Dickerson Park Zoo,

We are students from the Department of Media, Journalism, and Film within the College of Arts and Letters at Missouri State University, writing in regards to our visit. We’ve got to say, what potential you have! Unfortunately, that’s all we spotted that was worth actually noticing–piles and piles of nothing but potential.

Dickerson Park Zoo has a great location for Springfield. According to your website, you have over 340 animals that represent over 120 species. Plus, your gift shop is adorable. However, one of the first questions we had within minutes of entering the park was, where are all the rest of the visitors? For the duration of our visit, we only ran into a handful of people. Given, we showed up mid day, mid week, but by the end of our trip, we got the hunch that maybe we weren’t the only ones who seem to find the zoo to be a bit of a disappointment.

However, have no fear. Here at Missouri State, we believe that becoming contributing members of society is one of the most important things to learn. So we’re going to contribute as well as us journalists can. In this letter, we’re addressing the qualities of the park that turned us off, and furthermore, what we think you could do to improve based on the tools we use in our area of study as college students. We even used these tools to record parts of our time spent in your environment.

First of all, let’s talk about those ticket prices. $10?! We’re college students, so we know how to budget. You know how many meals we could eat off of $10?! Three days’ worth. We’re talkin’ breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
You guys should do discounts. After all, MSU has contributed amounts to the bear exhibit. It’d be cool if there were some kind of consonance that came with that. Maybe we should just get blunt right off the bat–the Dickerson Park Zoo is not worth a $10 admission.

We get it–money is tough; supply and demand; inflation and deflation. It’s hard to be able to charge only a $5 tariff when it’s obviously not the most popular place to be. We understand there are bills to pay and critters to care for. And we can’t forget about all those employee paychecks either. We assume you guys have employees anyway, because the only one we came into contact with was the ticket lady charging us extreme amounts of money for an hour and a half at the zoo, who also happened to be the gift shop cashier. She was eating some yogurt, but she was happy to take a group picture–see?!

Thank you, ticket sales/cashier lady, thank you.

Anyway, you know where we’re going with this. The Dickerson Park Zoo seems a smidge understaffed, especially the staff that keeps up the exhibits. Or at least, we don’t feel like the exhibits are getting the attention they deserve. We noticed a lot of dry watering holes–some even had leaves piled up in them! We understand that the weather is starting to get colder, and half of the animals may not be permitted to be outside during winter anyway, but that day, the weather was fairly warm.
Anyway, wouldn’t it be great if Springfield had a zoo with exhibits more appealing to the eye? A zoo is a place to escape and learn about creatures that live far away from us. Some of these animals look like their habitats weren’t even designed to their specific needs.

Speaking of animals, we hope they’re getting more attention than their exhibits. We happened to notice a poor and limping, injured wolf. We hoped that somebody had already noticed and he was just waiting on his treatment, but our hearts broke a little for him and his wolf buddies, who stood in front of him when we approached, as if trying to be protective.
Now, before you get upset, in no way, shape or form, are we trying to say that the zoo does not take care for the animals it is home to. But like we said before, there is potential here that should be paid attention to.

Again, we think we have a solution.

At Missouri State University, we have a number of animal science, wildlife conservation and management, and pre-veterinary students that we’re sure would be thrilled to intern or volunteer through the Dickerson Park Zoo. We haven’t talked to them, but we’re sure if you reached out, they’d be more than excited. Perhaps with more volunteers, you’d eventually have to hire less employees that you had to pay. Plus, you’d have a staff who you could be sure was passionate about what they do.

Finally, you guys should throw a party! It doesn’t have to be a party party necessarily (excuse our college mindset), but where’s all the fun? We know that during the month of October, Spooktacular is a big hit, but looking into the next year through your calendar posted on your website, you guys aren’t doing anything. We wouldn’t call ourselves public relations experts, but you guys should be having more events.

You’ve got to draw attention to this zoo. No, baby animals appearing on KY3 solely for the purpose of just being born isn’t enough. So, as media students, we’d like to share with you our tools. Our tools are applications. Online, smart applications would be great for the Dickerson Park Zoo to take advantage of. Through apps, you could gain awareness, which leads to more admission, which leads to more money for improvements! Hey, you might even get some donations!

To get started, let’s get everyone’s favorites out of the way–Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These apps should be used by businesses, and when used correctly can make a hell of a difference in business booming. You should be using these apps regularly, and you do, except for Instagram. Although you provide plenty of pictures through your preferred social media platforms, a zoo is a very visual-based place. So tiny picture updates at the zoo would be a great addition to your online realm. Plus, the pictures that you post through Instagram can be shared with Facebook and Twitter.

Good job. You’ve got the basics down–but you could be doing even better. We came up with a list of seven additional apps you could be utilizing to start improving the downsides of the zoo:

1. First up is Cyber Dust. Cyber Dust is very similar to Snapchat, only these messages disappear 100% completely and cannot be traced. You stay in control of your messages entirely. An app like this would come in handy when it comes time for planning additional events and keeping vital details between staff members alone. You don’t want anyone else stealing all those great party ideas (wink, wink).

2. When it comes to even further collaberation, Evernote is also an amazing, free application to keep all your thoughts (and others’ too) in one place. By installing this app, all your notes, pictures, and ideas will be together in one spot for as long as you want. Your works in Evernote can also be shared with other staff.

3. With an app like Phonto, you can add flattering text to pictures. There are tons of filters and fonts to apply to make yourself look more professional when you share your photos with your social media applications.

Anyone catch the Spongebob Squarepants reference?

4. Ever heard of a Video Collage? After creation through this kind of application, it might look like you’ve made a normal, picture collage. However, these pictures are actually stills from video that can be played with a click on each square.

5. Who says you can’t play a little dirty? Yik Yak is an anonymous social media app. It’s mostly for gossip amongst college students, but why not bring it into the professional atmosphere? Is it so wrong to post positive things about your work as an anonymous source, only vying to obtain more admission to your zoo? Probably. But we won’t tell.

IMG_1472

6. On SoundCloud, you can upload podcasts and interviews onto your own profile. These sound bites can easily be shared through social media sites. Having more than one way to share information keeps your social media audience from becoming bored of your posts.

7. Lastly, WordPress.com. We know that you already have a blog through your website, but maybe converging onto a blogging platform would be beneficial. This way, people can follow you and you can take notice of how awareness is growing.

Online, smart applications are vital tools in any business, whether it be learning, journaling, or keeping up a zoo. These apps help us everyday. As you can see above, we used some of them to help share our experience at the zoo with others. Through these sharing and collaborative apps we were able to remember the things we did and did not like so that we could write you this letter in the hopes of sparking some inspiration to improve the Dickerson Park Zoo into all it should be.

Disappointments aside, we look forward to our next visit. Until then, say hello to our friends, the bears!

Cloudy With a Chance of Storms

This week we saw what can happen when cloud storage is not protected well. A storm of celebrities were well hacked by their cloud account allowing Jennifer Lawrence to be seen in her birthday suit which pleased many people but created lightning with the threat of a lawsuit for anyone posting these to a website.

Cloud based storage is relatively safe way to store files and I myself took advantage of Dropbox that I got 100 gb free two phones ago. My 100 GB disappeared faster than a mugger in a New York ally along with my songlist and photo’s.

I know Jennifer Lawrence uses and Iphone, how because Icloud was hacked and that is how those photo’s surfaced. Apple not wanting to lose their price structure but losing customers to android forced Iphone users to buy Icloud which seemed like a good Idea at the time, I get the storage of an SD card that is floating in a cloud that keeps my storage. Really? No actually “The Cloud” is nothing but a bunch of servers on a server farm hosting your information which causes that can be hacked and voila, naked photo’s of celebrities. I need the space which is shared between my laptop, phone, and tablet and it acts as an extra hard drive. Are you safe? I can say that I never had a problem with dropbox or many of the other free services I have been offered. It seems like every cloud service out there is offering a ton of upgrade options and free promotions. I personally will not use more than the 100 GB that I am getting with Google Drive but many services such as Sugarsync, and SurDoc that works with all your devices such as Google Drive.

Shifting through all of your free storage accounts can be a bit time consuming and having you screaming like the Gods of Thunder when you uploaded your homework to Google drive or was that SurDoc? Maybe I uploaded it to Microsoft’s Skydrive or should I say One Drive as a full makeover has been done adding more space for you to use and more functional between laptop and phone or tablet devices. Well never fear,  a sure fire answer is here called Unclouded. Follow this back up link since it’s not in the Play Store yet you can still get you hands on it by following the link above. It’s in Beta test right now so look for it in the near future. it Takes all of your cloud clients and puts them together and tells you what you use the most, puts documents in order by date and actually comes in quite handy and while I was lucky to know about the beta version you may have to wait another week or two before all the bugs and security flaws are worked out. You never know when that Selfie you took just special for your boyfriend ends up on the internet for the world to see and that creates a dark cloud  that would bring you to tears, but no one knows your crying when your crying in the rain.
